Volunteer Commitments

Volunteers make the JA experience for students. The programs are fun, hands-on, and easy to teach. If you choose to volunteer for JA, we do ask you to make a few commitments.

TIME COMMITMENT: For the JA in a Day format, volunteers will need to set aside about 6 hours including a 1 hour training and 5 hour event.

In the traditional format, the time commitment depends on the grade level:

  • Elementary School – about 6 hours including 1 hour training and 5 one-hour visits to classroom. The volunteer arranges a schedule with the classroom teacher. Visits can be once a week, every other week, whatever works best for both parties’ schedules.
  • Middle School – about 7 hours including 1 hour training and 6 one-hour visits to classroom. The volunteer arranges a schedule with the classroom teacher. Visits can be once a week, every other week, whatever works best for both parties’ schedules.
  • High School – between 8 and 12 hours including 1 hour training and 5-12 one-hour visits to the classroom. The volunteer arranges a schedule with the classroom teacher. Visits can be once a week, every other week, whatever works best for both parties’ schedules.

PREP WORK: The JA staff trains all volunteers. Volunteers receive training in classroom management and course curriculum.

Every volunteer gets a guidebook that includes lesson plans, an orientation for each lesson, helpful teaching hints, and a step-by-step guide on what to say and do.

VOLUNTEER CONDUCT: All volunteers must sign a volunteer conduct form before working with students.
